A Passion That Sparked a Purpose
A Passion That Sparked a Purpose

What began as a simple fascination with handmade textiles soon evolved into a mission to preserve one of India's oldest artistic traditions. During a visit to a village in Gujarat, interior designer Shipa Patel discovered the intricate beauty of hand block printing and was inspired by the skill and dedication of local artisans.

She started creating handcrafted garments for herself before realizing that this centuries old craft was slowly disappearing.

Creating Chhapa

In 2013, the Patel family launched Chhapa, a sustainable clothing and lifestyle brand named after the Gujarati word for imprint. Their vision was to give traditional hand block printing a contemporary identity without compromising its authenticity.

Instead of relying only on conventional motifs, the family introduced fresh designs inspired by everyday life, wildlife, travel, and Indian culture. This creative approach helped attract younger customers while ensuring that the traditional printing technique remained at the heart of every product they created.

Chhapa works closely with nearly 25 artisans, providing them with consistent employment, fair compensation, and opportunities to continue practising their craft throughout the year. The company believes that preserving heritage begins with supporting the people who keep these traditions alive.

The steady flow of work has encouraged many artisan families to continue hand block printing as a profession. Young members of these families are now learning the craft, ensuring that valuable skills are passed on to the next generation instead of disappearing over time.

Sustainability is central to every aspect of Chhapa's business. The company works with natural fabrics such as cotton and khadi while using environmentally friendly azo free dyes that are safer for artisans as well as consumers.

Leftover fabric is thoughtfully repurposed into products including bags, pouches, laptop sleeves, and camera straps, reducing waste and maximizing resources. By combining traditional craftsmanship with environmentally responsible production, Chhapa demonstrates that fashion can be both beautiful and sustainable.

From a small family enterprise in Gujarat, Chhapa has grown into a globally recognized brand with customers across the United States, Singapore, the UAE, and several other countries. Alongside its retail store in Ahmedabad, the company reaches international buyers through its online platform.

Today, the business generates an annual revenue of approximately ₹1.5 crore, proving that authentic Indian craftsmanship has a strong place in global markets when supported by quality, innovation, and meaningful storytelling.

When Research Goes Beyond the Laboratory
When Research Goes Beyond the Laboratory

Scientific research often remains confined to laboratories and academic journals, but some ideas have the power to transform everyday life. At Kerala University, PhD scholar Reshma P.R. turned years of botanical research into a living, breathing experience by redesigning an unused balcony into a calming indoor wellness space.

Instead of creating another ornamental garden, she envisioned a place where science, sustainability, and mental wellbeing could coexist. The project demonstrates how research can directly improve the quality of life for students while encouraging people to reconnect with nature in meaningful ways.

Nature as a Partner in Wellbeing
Nature as a Partner in Wellbeing

Modern lifestyles keep people indoors for most of the day, exposing them to pollutants while increasing stress and mental fatigue. Recognizing this challenge, Reshma focused her doctoral research on plants that naturally improve indoor air quality and create healthier environments.

Her project highlights an important idea: plants are not merely decorative elements but active contributors to healthier living spaces. By integrating greenery into everyday environments, even small spaces can become places that encourage relaxation, better concentration, and emotional balance.

The transformed balcony offers visitors an experience rather than simply a visual attraction. Comfortable seating, vertical greenery, flowing water, natural stones, and soft wind chimes work together to create an atmosphere that encourages people to slow down and be present.

Students are invited to disconnect from their phones, sit quietly, and spend uninterrupted time in the space. Every design choice supports mindfulness, making the balcony a sanctuary where visitors can pause from academic pressure and experience moments of calm during busy university life.

The garden features carefully selected plant species known for their ability to improve indoor environments. Varieties such as Snake Plant, Lucky Bamboo, Spider Lily, Hemigraphis, and Drosera were chosen because of their documented air-purifying qualities and adaptability to indoor conditions.

Rather than focusing solely on visual appeal, the selection reflects scientific evidence on reducing common indoor pollutants. This thoughtful combination of research and design transforms the garden into a practical demonstration of how botanical science can contribute to healthier everyday spaces.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the project showcases responsible and sustainable design practices. Biodegradable materials, eco-friendly planters, natural textures, and locally available plants were incorporated to minimize environmental impact while maintaining long-term sustainability.

The project proves that creating meaningful green spaces does not require expensive infrastructure or vast landscapes. With creativity and careful planning, even a modest university balcony can become an inspiring example of sustainable architecture and environmental responsibility.

Viridescent Haven encourages educational institutions to rethink how shared spaces are designed. Instead of viewing gardens only as decorative features, universities can create environments that actively support learning, creativity, and emotional wellbeing.

The initiative also demonstrates that innovation often begins with simple ideas. By combining scientific knowledge with thoughtful design, Reshma has shown how campuses can become healthier, greener, and more people-centric while inspiring similar projects in schools, offices, hospitals, and public spaces.

A Small Space with a Big Message

The transformation of a single university balcony carries a powerful message about the relationship between people and nature. It reminds us that wellness is not always found through complex technology but can often begin with clean air, greenery, quiet surroundings, and mindful design.

Reshma P.R.'s initiative is an inspiring example of innovation driven by purpose. It illustrates how scientific research, environmental sustainability, and human wellbeing can come together to create spaces that heal, educate, and inspire future generations.
